For the Williamsburg hipster scene out on full display, look no further than the Brooklyn Flea, now back for its third year with a new outdoor location in Williamsburg (27 North 6th Street) on Sundays and one in Fort Greene (176 Lafayette Avenue) on Saturdays. The first official outdoor weekend took place the first week in April and the vintage clothing, antique, jewelry, art, and food selection attracted countless fashion bloggers, tech editors, and foodies, including Spike from Top Chef. The market stays outdoors through Thanksgiving and then moves indoors to Skylight One Hanson from Thanksgiving through March.
The selection of goods is certainly niche. Those who don’t like “the hunt” when it comes to finding vintage wears need not stop by. Similarly, those whose palate isn’t intrigued by the likes of carrot jam or Momofuku Milk Bar’s infamous “crack pie” will unlikely find many options for palate pleasers. That said, meandering through the hundreds of vendors on the one acre lot, especially on a warm day, is a unique pastime and a wonderful way to support talented up-and-comers.
Among the most noteworthy stops are Birdhouse Jewelry where you’ll find18 karat gold on .925 sterling silver or brass necklaces with semi-precious gemstones and pearls, Blue Canary Vintage for quirky antique jewelry, and you can get summer-ready with some innovative shades at the Extinct Optics stand.
You’ll find handmade jewlery and vintage at Reclaimed Trading, while Paste stocks eye-catching graphic tees designed by artist Jason Laurits and hand-silkscreened in Brooklyn.
