Every year, the resort season starts to feel more and more like the Fall-Winter and Spring-Summer ones as an increasing amount of designers expand their brands to include the more casual-minded season. Much to the delight of editors, one of the wonderful things about Resort collection presentations is that brands that would otherwise show in London, Milan, or Paris not only come to New York to present their collection, but often do so in a setting that includes hors d’oeuvres and cocktails — something rare during regular season shows. To that end, here are some of the latest designers to present their collections.
Marc Jacobs: Laid-back and youthful, it’s hard not to smile when looking at Marc Jacobs’ collection for the Resort season. It included a knee-length pink tutu embellished with appliquéd daisies paired with a short-sleeved striped gray sweatshirt, a reoccurring paisley-like print, a daisy-like print, and hot pants.
Calvin Klein: Calvin Klein has been a force to be reckoned with on the red carpet as of late. A slew of notable stars have been opting for the brand and more often than not choosing bright gowns — think Zoe Saldana in a lemon strapless look at the Met Gala. For Resort, however, Francisco Costa stuck with a classic Calvin Klein color palette of neutrals. A parade of minimalist, fit-to-perfection looks made their way down the runway, most of which are sure to become closet staples for many women for years to come.
Donna Karan: Donna Karen’s Resort collection featured a lineup of mostly monochromatic white, black, and red looks with some graphic pops in between, allowing the stunning shapes created by the technically savvy designer to do all the talking. Among the stand-outs were a a draped coat and scuba-like separates that recalled Stella McCartney’s Fall 2011 collection.
Burberry: It goes without saying that the Burberry Resort collection, designed by Christopher Bailey, included faultless trench coats done in a variety of materials and colors, but the collection also included a slew of cozy knits — often finished with quirky embellishments, prints, and hats, which, judging from the last few Burberry collections, Bailey seems to be particularly fond of.
Jason Wu: The young designer showed a balanced mix of casual sun dresses, sporty separates, and swimwear (a first for the designer), with more formal cocktail dresses and buttoned-up separates, making for a well-rounded collection of beautifully crafted pieces.
