Fashion Fill-in-the-Blanks with Thom Filicia

1.    The one style tip everyone needs to know …

“For men, plastic surgery’s a big no-no. For women, an effortless yet fabulous look is far superior to a labored look, when it looks like a lot of time went into it. When women look like they’ve walked out the door looking fabulous, that’s when they look the most fabulous.”

2.    My most treasured wardrobe item …

“My belts. I have probably about a thousand belts. Some of them are vintage, some of them are cheapy-cheap. Some of them are old, some of them are new, some of them are nylon. Stripes, patterns. I don’t know. I just think a great belt … I think belts are underrated, especially for men.”

3.    I’m bored to death of this trend …

“Women carrying ridiculously sized handbags that have what looks like a bucket of shit hanging off the side, with metal and clinkety-clanks and charms, and all sorts of crap. I just feel that, handbags have gotten out of control. It’s like a five thousand dollar nightmare from hell.”

4.    I never leave the house without …

“A watch. I always wear a watch. I have a variety of watches to choose from. It’s mood-based.”

5.    If I could raid anyone’s closet, it would be …

Jimmy Fallon. I think Jimmy Fallon looks really great lately. I love everything he wears and I love all his suits. I bumped into him at a party not too long ago, and he had on this cool windbreaker. He’s cool and he has style, but it’s not defining. He walks into a room before his style does, but he’s still very stylish. And I think that’s very cool. He owns his style, his style doesn’t own him. But I think he has great style right now. I just like his whole look. And I also think he’s probably like, the coolest person.”

6.    My most memorable fashion blunder …

“God, there’s been so many of them. It could be the outfit I’m wearing right now.”

7.    My guilty pleasure …

“I’m crazy about chocolate. Chocolate truffles are kinda my guilty pleasure. From La Maison du Chocolat. I love champagne. My guiltiest pleasure is probably spending money foolishly.”

8.    Best fashion week memory/experience …

“It’s not during fashion week, though. My favorite fashion memory was sitting at the Costume Institute with Serena Williams, who’s unbelievable, as my date. With Anna Wintour and the president of Louis Vuitton sitting next to me. It was a good mix: tennis player, gay guy from cable, Anna Wintour.”

9.    My favorite thing about fashion week …

“The energy. It’s sort of a welcome back from the summer. It feels like a big kick-off to the fall. It sort of reminds you how fabulous New York can be.”

10.     Fashion week in one word …

“Shenanigans.”
