Pink Tartan played heavily on the pastels, mixing shades of mint and, predictably, pink with textured silver and knits. The models stomped wearing slanted top hats and butterfly prints in what oozed a feminine 1950s aesthetic. The line later transformed into black and gold, a trend that President and Head Designer of Pink Tartan, Kimberley Newport-Mimran, is eager to continue on from Fall.
Making her Canadian catwalk debut, Maybelline spokesmodel Charlotte Free — known for her eye-catching iconic locks, delicate features, pink hair, and eclectic street style — donned a full black silk skirt and textured gold vest for her Pink Tartan march.
“As a designer, I am always on the lookout for what is fresh, new and invigorating. Charlotte Free brings these three key elements to the runway. The team at Maybelline New York was quick to recognize Charlotte’s style, attitude and approach to fashion as the perfect complement to our S/S 2013 show. She is the ultimate face and muse for Pink Tartan this season,” said Newport-Mimran.
Moving on to last night’s show, all eyes were on Adrian Wu, who is possibly one of the quickest and youngest designers to move up the North American design scene in decades. He’s renowned for his off-the-wall, sometimes eccentric designs (his FW12 fashion show featured models wearing Guy Fawkes masks), although this season was a little more subdued.
All of Wu’s models walked in what I can only describe as a Sarah Palin beehive and glasses. The theme was life in the future after a natural disaster, inspired by the popular video game Bioshock, which features a very steampunk alternate universe (ask your beau about it, I did). This meant the models were draped in bunched metallic paper-mache (or was it steel wool?) and rolls of red and black. I can’t help but think that one of his creations looks a little like a nuclear mushroom cloud. What do you think?
