But, like, wearing real shoes is hard . Seriously, I’m going to the grocery store and I have to tie laces (sorry, won’t give up my Converse) or slip into some flats that rub against my foot? Why, style Gods, why? So, in my effort to avoid flip flops, I tirelessly scour store shelves for comfortable but stylish alternatives — and I’m more than happy to bring some of my newest favorites to you.
Stylish-but-Comfy Summer Flats to Avoid the Flip-Flop Trap
Old Navy
I've liked this colorblock sandal from OId Navy ever since they first popped up in the brand's ubiquitous advertising. At the price of some flip-flops, you won't have to sacrifice budget for style. The flat strappy sandal is obviously here to stay and colorblocking is a great way to make it look fresh. And there is the merest hint of a heel to keep your feet from hitting the pavement too hard.
Old Navy Cross-Strap Sandals, $22 to $24.95
Giuseppe Zanotti
These futuristic, metallic sandals are the perfect day-to-night option. The flat heel and sleek design make them great for the office, but the metallic detail and edgy design keep them stylish enough for an after-hours event. While there's surely some room for gladiator sandals on our list, it's kind of great to see some metallics that don't follow that well-covered territory. These also come in silver.
Giuseppe Zanotti Metallic Patent Leather Flat Sandal, $399.95
Tory Burch
It's not everyone's signature style but there are certainly girls who can't get enough of their logos, and Tory Burch is their queen. This thong sandal is so close to being a flip flop it might give you your fix, but a leather ankle strap keeps them more firmly on your foot and in the stylish set. The pave crystal-encrusted logo signature will keep you from missing the TB flats you wore all winter.
Tory Burch Violet Thong Sandal, $225
Isapera
These mixed-media sandals are pretty much the foot version of arm candy. Colorblock calfskin straps share space with a snake print band and a gold braided strap. These are also pretty versatile. You can see them on a Vanessa Hudgens type or city sophisticate. A rubber sole will keep pounding the pavement from punishing your feet.
Isapera Lemonia Strappy Sandals, $138
Mango
If cage sandals up your calves are a little much for you, these strappy shoes will give you a hit of style without too big a dose of drama. Two ankle straps combine with three foot straps seemlessly into a toe strap. The mirror effect heel is the added design element that makes these special.
Mango Metallic Strappy Sandals, $59.99
Sol Sana
If all these delicate beauties aren't for you, perhaps something more punk rock is up your alley. Thick black leather straps and big silver buckles make these the summer version of moto boots, and you know you miss them in your summer wardrobe.
Sol Sana Avery Flat Sandals with Double Ankle Strap, $85
Koolaburra
Strappy isn't the only way to go in summer. Asymmetric cut-outs in a pebbled leather upper are both utilitarian and a little avant garde. Keep a summer dress from getting too girly or just keep your sure footing with this more serious sandal.
