Can We Call It a Trend? Rodebjer Sends ‘Day After’ Beauty Look Down the Runway

Anyone who lived through the first incarnation of grunge will certainly pick up on the aesthetic’s influence on the Rodebjer Fall 2014 beauty look. I hesitate to compare it to “heroin chic,” but Rodebjer’s girl has definitely had a good time the night before.

“The inspiration is like the day-after hairdo,” said Aveda’s Erika Svedjevik. “She had a nice blow dry and everything, she went out partying and got a little wild, woke up in the morning and she’s going to brunch and just tidy up and put some dry shampoo in it to refresh it a little bit.”

The products that get the perfect mussed-but-tidy feel are Aveda Pure Abundance Style Prep and Hair Potion.

MAC Cosmetics Lead Artist Fredrik Stambro described the look as “a rock ‘n’ roll girl, but this is her daytime look; she puts her liner on top of a liner that was made last night, so it’s supposed to look a little worn in.” A smudgy, morning-after eye is always easier to achieve than a super precise look, especially when less harsh colors are used.

“We’re using dark brown, it’s a sexy look a little bit smudged,” Stambro said. His team used Ground Brown shadow and Coffee liner. Plus, MAC is coming out with a new mascara this spring that saw its runway debut — Mineralize Multi Effect Lush mascara.

Since the eye was supposed to be a bit messy, skin was kept very fresh using Verso Skincare. Models were prepped with the Verso night cream, which is not terribly heavy and dries very matte. Because it’s not too heavy, it doesn’t finish with a film, so it also acts as a primer. At the same time, skin benefits from Verso’s special Retinol 8 anti-aging formula.

Finally, nails were done by PRITI NYC. Digits were painted a deep rich black called Nigra with a matte topcoat. PRITI NYC ‘s Marissa explained that this season we’re seeing a juxtaposition of darker nail looks like this one and more nude, natural nails. On the trendy side, there is even 3D nail art coming down the runway. Artwork created on a 3D printer is painted with PRITI NYC nail colors for a look that’s completely different from traditional nail art.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen “day after beauty” on the runway for Fall 2014. Brandon Sun also named grunge as an inspiration for his beauty look.
