The Biggest Style Trends for Prom this Spring
-
Lace
While lace tends to wane in popularity, as it can be too ice skater or granny-ish, this spring it’s reappearing in a variety of fun dress styles for prom. Whether it’s a bodice covered in lace, lace sleeves or a wraparound lace belt, there’s plenty of this pretty, angelic fabric being added to a slew of prom dress styles.

Slits
Ever since Angelina Jolie made her infamous wide-legged slit dress stance for the Oscars, this va-va-voom silhouette has been all the rage in a variety of long dresses. Thigh grazing styles are everywhere with many one-shoulder and strapless styles dominating the prom scene. Sequin side cut-outs or crystal waist embellishments amp up the wow factor for these styles.

Structured or Boned Bodices
While some prom attendees might be scared that a super-shaping corset will cause them to look far more pageant than princess, boning inside a bustier can add curves and create an enviably hourglass figure. An organza ball gown can be added along with tulle or something like a crumple ruched pleat for maximum impact; rhinestones and crystals can always be adhered to a custom bodice for some razzle-dazzle.
-
Pastels
Seafoam, mint, peach, lemon and bubblegum are all the perfect pastels to rock for the ultimate high school date night. Lime, coral and lilac are also seeing a surge in popularity. Pretty, dainty and feminine, these colors aren’t overpowering and flatter most skin tones. Colors not on the hot list? White, can look too bridal, beige can wash out a lot of skin types and cheetah and safari prints aren’t sophisticated enough. Black or gold embroidery can be added to sherbet shaded dresses that makes these soft shades really pop.

Vintage
Find your inner flapper with retro prom styles including fringed bottom dresses and full taffeta or pleated hoop skirts. Layered lace or fit-and-flare styles are the perfect romantic twist on traditional prom garb. An ornate cocktail dress can double as a prom gown and adding pearls or satin gloves can create a unique 1950s style that will stand out in a sea of modern dresses.
