Blake Lively is one of the most stylish women in Hollywood, and the wardrobe for her new film, The Age of Adaline, is about to rival her fashion expertise with looks that seamlessly transcend trends and time.
Portraying the life of Adaline, a woman who lives as a 29-year-old for decades after a car accident renders her with a condition whereby she doesn’t age, Blake never has to give in to grandma muumuus or perforated Crocs. Instead, Aussie costume designer Angus Strathie (famous for his designs in the film Moulin Rouge) mixes vintage and modern pieces for a timeless and conservative wardrobe, with the help of the Gucci fashion house.

Forget that the leading actress will forever be remembered as Gossip Girl‘s Serena Van Der Woodsen, the fabulous schoolgirl with a relaxed-yet-glam style. A century’s worth of trends is a lot for any girl to rock, and a film which takes place over so many style eras is no mean feat for any wardrobe department.
We’re talking circa 40s, 50s, 60s and so on. Not even your local vintage shop covers such an extensive time period. “It was extra challenging to be able to find all those periods and all those moods and all those emotions of this character,” Angus explains.

Whether it’s a textured bodycon midi accessorised with vintage earrings, a monochromatic casual knit T-shirt teamed with black cropped capris, or a shapely olive-green coat with some classy leather gloves, Angus finds and delivers an understated, ladylike look we all want to rep about town. Blake’s not a bad canvas, either.
Plus, the revolving wardrobe truly puts the cycle of fashion into perspective for the film’s style-savvy viewers. Be it a cosy turtleneck or a velvet gown, over the century, and even sometimes just decades, we can observe trends come full circle.

We don’t want to encourage any clothing hoarders, but films like this make us want to hold onto our wardrobe favourites forever. Chances are, it’s probably going to come back in fashion during this decade or the next.
Catch The Age of Adaline when it hits Australian cinemas on April 16.
