The change of seasons means many things, from ordering grande pumpkin spice lattes to storing our tanks and pulling out cozy layers of tights and sweaters. But for true beauty girls at heart, it’s pulling out those fall-appropriate colors we tried to sneak into August because we couldn’t wait any longer. From deep plum lips to earthy tones and gold, glitzy shadows, fall is the opportunity to experiment with color in your cosmetics.
When it comes to lipstick, the basic fall lip colors range from wine red to purple plum to golden bronze shades and we love them all. But sporting them solo can cause you to get stuck in a makeup rut rather quickly. We touched base with makeup pros to see what’s hot this season in the lipstick world and how to upgrade your favorite hue from ordinary to oh-so-trendy. Here’s how to rock a bright or deep lip in style this fall.

2 Easy Steps To Upgrade Your Lip Color This Fall

Dark Lips
From deep berries to vampy reds, fall is totally the season to start sporting dark lip hues. Makeup pro and executive artist for MŌDA Brush Dominique Lerma recommends pairing a bold lip with naked eyes and dewy skin. After all, simplicity is still trending in makeup this season. To spice up a plain lip color, Lerma recommends outlining lips with a complementary matte formula with a lip brush. "With the matte color, take your ring finger and lightly press into the bow of the lip and around outer edges for a subtle stain effect," she says.

Bright Lips
Colder temps don’t necessarily mean sporting a bright pout is forbidden. Who follows rules anymore, anyway? This season is all about personalization. Rock whatever you want and it can be trendy if you focus on the details. Rose-Marie Swift, professional makeup artist and founder of RMS Beauty, suggests adding a touch of glitz to your pout this season. "We all know glitter is in style, but it doesn’t always translate properly," shares Swift. "Combining a bright lip with a luminous product rather than glitter can look seductively sultry." Think of it as grown-up glitter or a grown-up glow.
