At the start of the year, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) released its annual resolutions calling for designers to focus on sustainability, body positivity, diversity and equality in 2019. The organization is now taking the first steps towards helping the industry to adopt more sustainable strategies with the launch of its sustainability hub.
According to the CFDA, the hub is “designed to provide open access resources and information specific to fashion design x business sustainable strategies.” Information includes the CFDA Guide to Sustainable Strategies, which aims to take “the complex idea of sustainability and simplify it into clear, digestible resources and actions.” There is also a Sustainable Strategies Toolkit, which frames the issue into a “step-by-step guidance in the creation of strategic blueprints.”
There is also a resource directory and the A-Z Materials Index that reveals everything to know about materials like cotton, bamboo, rayon and more — a helpful resource not only to designers but to consumers who want to make more informed choices about the clothes they purchase and wear. The CFDA will also be holding several discussions and events focusing on sustainability in fashion throughout the year.
Given that the fashion industry is the second largest polluter in the world, just after the oil industry, we’re glad to see that the American fashion industry is taking concrete steps towards minimizing its impact on the environment.
