Some designers opted to have their models wear functional barrettes. This was the case at the Cynthia Rowley show, where the models’ hair was styled into a tight ponytail, pinned into a bun, and fastened with oversized square barrettes diagonally clipped through the bun.
However, other designers chose to use barrettes as a decoration rather than as a functional accessory. The latter option was most evident at the Marc Jacobs show, where some models had textured, side parted hair with huge flower barrettes fasted onto one side.
Barrettes are one of the most versatile hair accessories. They can give an outfit a glamorous, high fashion feel, like the crystal design seen at Badgley Mischka.
They can also tone down your look and make it more appropriate for day-to-day apparel (as we saw with the slender barrettes used at the Prabal Gurung show). At Gurung, the models’ hair was blown straight, combed to create a deep side part, and tied into a ponytail.
A small section of hair was then wrapped around the ponytail elastic and clipped with a slender barrette, resulting in a gorgeous, understated finish.
No matter what style of barrette you choose, you may feel a nod to your schoolgirl past. Feel free to play this up or down, depending on the look you pair with this hair accessory. With so many options to choose from, you’re bound to find a barrette that will perfectly complement your outfit.
