Detox from the Outside In

If you’re serious about detoxing from the outside in, a visit to the spa could be a great starting off point. A trip to Oskia’s Boutique Spa in London for their new Revitalise Detox & Immune Boosting Face & Body Treatment (£105) left me with a great idea of what it takes to manage your toxins from the outside. Internationally renowned facialist Abigail James designed the treatment to include two types of body brushing, hot stones, acupressure, and reflexology, all of which work to best release your stresses and toxins. Even if you can’t make it to the spa, these practices can be safely done at home to help release toxins.

Dry Body Brushing

It sounds kind of scary but body brushing, in it’s many incarnations (loofah, anyone?), is an integral part of releasing toxins. Two things that you have to remember are that the brush should be dry and you should always brush towards the heart. Starting at the feet, continuously brush upwards for the best results. Using a tool such as Elemis’ Spa at Home Body Brush $44 is a great way to combat cellulite, uneven skin, and promote healthy circulation.

Baths and Soaks

Sweating is one of the body’s natural detox processes and heat is often used in detox spa treatments. A bath is a great way to allow your skin to open and release toxins. Instead of your typical bubble bath, which can contain harsh soaps, opt instead for an oil such as Elemental Herbology’s Detox Bath Oil $29, which contains a mixture of oils that can help circulation and aid detoxification while leaving your skin smooth and moisturized. Bath salts and soaks also offer similar results.

Masks and Washes

Exfoliation can play a key role in detoxifying your skin. A product such as Liz Earle’s Cleanse & Polish $24.50 steps into the role of both cleanser and scrub. A hot muslin cloth acts as an exfoliator without damaging the delicate skin on your face.  Black masks are also great for purifying your skin. An at-home treatment such as Boscia’s Luminizing Black Mask $34 boasts a blend of clay with mineral-rich ingredients that work to cleanse pores, naturally exfoliate, and reduce inflammation. If you’re looking for a quick fix, this type of mask will give visible results right away.
