Natalie Portman: Beauty Look of the Week

Who: Natalie Portman

Where: The New York City Ballet Spring Gala

Why we like it: The biggest trend in red carpet beauty this year isn’t dark lips or retro liner, it’s the bronze smoky eye. A modern alternative to the traditional grey/black version, this look offers softer, but no less dramatic, definition.

How to get it at home: To get Natalie’s dewy skin, look for a lighter foundation that will allow your skin’s natural texture to shine through. Choose a product, such as NARS’ Sheer Glow Foundation $42, which gives you a satin-finish that allows for buildable coverage where you need it most. For a subtle flush on the cheek, try a cream formula, such as Bobbi Brown’s Pot Rouge For Lips and Cheeks $24, which will add to the natural look of the base.

Another big trend in red carpet makeup is groomed, rather than fiercely defined, brows. To get this look, opt for a clear or tinted gel, such as Anastasia’s Tinted Brow Gel $21, which will ensure your brows are neat without hard definition. When working with metallic colors, a shadow primer is key. A product, such as Too Faced’s Shadow Insurance $18, will make your look last longer and the glitter stay where you put it. The easiest way to get a look such as this is to invest in a neutrals palette, such as Dior’s 5-Colour Eyeshadow $59 or Urban Decay’s Naked Palette $50, which give you options to create your ideal bronze look. Try to start with a lighter base color, then build the shadows in around the crease, outer corner, and under the lash line. Always start with less product than you need; you can always build it up. Line your tightline and waterline with a dark liner, such as Urban Decay’s 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Perversion $19, curl your lashes, and apply two coats of your favorite mascara. Finish off your look with a sheer pink gloss, such as bareMinerals’ Marvelous Moxie Lipgloss in Rebel $18.
