the Fashion Spot: Tell us a little about the blow dry bar you’re opening with Tracy Anderson and Gwyneth Paltrow.
David Babaii: I have been asked so many times why I haven’t opened my own salon but when Gwyneth came to me with this opportunity, I thought it was the perfect time with perfect synergy. Tracy has also shared an important role in my life by giving me the inspiration and guidance to lose 100 pounds. I feel they are the perfect team as we share the same philosophies about women, health and beauty. What else can a man ask for?
tFS: How can you make your ‘do last through a few days of workouts?
DB: First, one needs to shampoo and condition their hair with the right products designed for their hair type. Next, I cannot stress this enough, but rinsing is so important. My motto is and always will be to rinse, rinse and rinse. If you leave any residue, it will weigh the hair down and actually dry it out. When members come in, we will teach them how to work with their hair during a workout. This might include how to create a messy ponytail or braid to create some texture or how to wrap your hair.
tFS: What are some hairstyles that can take you from pre gym to workout, to dinner with the girls, all without getting that dreaded greasy look?
DB: I think twisting the hair into a messy ponytail then spritzing with a beach spray allows you to go from pre workout to a night out by simply undoing the ponytail and shaking your hair loose to unveil loose beachy waves. Sleek ponytails are also a great style to take you through your day. To change it up for dinner, you can wrap the ends into a low chignon or add a headband or clip to dress it up.
tFS: Let’s say your hair does get a bit greasy after your workout. How do you fix it?
DB: I usually tell my clients to dust their hair lightly with baby powder to absorb any oils, plus it has such a clean fragrance. Or, bring a special water bottle filled with water and fresh squeezed lemon juice. Then take clean cotton pads moistened and lightly wipe over the top, hairline, part and wherever needed to refresh your hair.
tFS: Any other hair tricks?
DB: It’s Earth month, so here are some of my eco-friendly tips:
- As far as shampoos, conditioners and cosmetics, many of their harmful ingredients can easily be absorbed into our bodies. Make notations if certain ingredients are under “study” or questionable and try to avoid them as much as possible.
- Invest in products that utilize safe practices and are environmentally conscious, including the use of packaging that is and can be recycled.
- Take an active role in looking for companies that use and support safe, natural and renewable ingredients.
- When purchasing hair care products, look for products that are free of: sulfates, parabens, dangerous petrochemicals, phthalates, formaldehyde and free of all animal testing.
