Why we like it: Summer hair is always tricky, as there’s nothing worse than a sweaty neck, but we think simpler is better. Updos are often complicated and finicky, but we love this simple, textured and elegant ponytail that can be dressed up or down.
How to get it at home: How you get this look completely depends on your hair’s texture. For those of you lucky enough to be born with thick, textured straight hair, pass go, collect your $200 and get straight to the later steps of this tutorial. For the rest of us, getting the texture right in this look is the first step. Starting with wet hair, work a styling cream or salt spray, such as Drybar’s Mai Tai Spritzer Sea Salt Spray ($25), through the length of your hair. Then flip your hair upside down for the most lift possible and blow your hair dry and straight, but not sleek or flat. Depending on how well your hair takes to salt spray, you may be able to skip the next step, but for women with flat hair, spray a bit of Oribe’s Dry Texturizing Spray ($42) through the middle and ends.
Next, gather your hair into a high ponytail and secure with a hair band. Then take a small section from the middle (the longest) and wrap it around to cover the band before securing with a pin, such as Karina’s Bobby Pins ($2.80). It may seem counterproductive, but we suggest running a small amount of oil, such as Bumble and bumble’s Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil ($38), through the ends of your pony to calm any especially unruly strands.
