Beauty Experts on the Best Beauty Advice
Sonia Kashuk
Founder of Sonia Kashuk
"My mother's advice on beauty wasn't about tips and tricks. She always made sure we felt beautiful inside and out, confident and strong. And whenever I wasn't feeling my best self she would always say 'Put on a little lipstick' to give me a little pick-me-up."
Jane Iredale
Founder of Jane Iredale
“Two things my mother told me that I still abide by: Always wash your face at night and use cider vinegar. At the time, I thought she was a little nutty about vinegar because she used it for everything. She would drink it — a teaspoon in water every day — and use it to clean the kitchen. It’s a wonderful antimicrobial, but it also normalizes the pH of skin. For years I got eczema, and I always used antibiotic creams, but one day she said, ‘Why don’t you put vinegar on that?’ And I did, and it went away, and that’s what I do now. It’s a wonderful tip.”
Laurice Rahme
Founder and CEO of Bond No. 9 New York
“Never leave the house without a lipstick. I learned this from the Carita sisters in Paris."
Kyle White
Celebrity colorist at the Oscar Blandi Salon
"The best beauty advice I ever got was from Dr. Brandt when I first met him at the tender age of 27. He warned me of the serious damage that sun exposure causes and started me on Botox for my frown lines. I took it to heart and never got tan, except for spray tans, which I'm a total expert at by the way...I'm convinced that's why at 47 years of age, I'm constantly asked for ID when buying liquor..."
Annet King
Director of global education for Dermalogica and The International Dermal Institute
"My mum would always say my skin isn’t a handbag or a pair of shoes: You can’t replace it or buy a new one, so treat it well and take care of it! It will show in the long-run…and that was certainly the case for her! She still reminds me how boys would come up to us and think we were friends! She’s so much fun, and the happiest, sweetest person I know, who’s always up for a giggle."
Natalie Gee
Co-founder of Gee Beauty
“Maintaining well-groomed eyebrows is definitely one of the best pieces of beauty advice I can give. The right brow shape and color really do define and frame the face in a natural way. My favorite method to shape the brow is to thread, because I find I can be very precise without thinning out the brow (fullness is key to a fresh, youthful look). Even if you don’t have a lot of fullness, you can always tint the brows — another favorite service we offer at Gee Beauty. It’s a semi-permanent color that lasts for about two to three weeks. It really does help to define and fill-out even the fine, little hairs. It’s also an amazing option for those that want a super-natural, low-maintenance look, but still want to feel polished. Brush the brows with a touch of brow gel each morning to set them and keep them in place all day. That, and always wear SPF!!”
Dr. Pratima Raichur
Founder of PRATIMA Skincare
"For a healthy, firm body and youthful complexion, perform a daily self-massage using pure herbal oils, according to your body type or dosha , to nourish, rejuvenate and tone the skin. This soothing ritual assists both externally and internally by detoxifying the body and promoting increased circulation, helping to delay the aging process. Drinking warm water throughout the day will help stimulate your metabolism and boost detoxification, promoting better digestion and flushing out toxins for clear, smooth, radiant skin."
Simone Ciafardini
Vice president of education and artistry at Make Up For Ever
“The best beauty advice I was ever given for complexion was drink water all day, every day. The best makeup advice was to never forget to groom your brows. Grooming your brows is more important for a polished look than almost any other makeup step.”
Dr. Amy Wechsler
Dermatologist
"The best beauty advice I ever got was to not pick at my face. While it can certainly be tempting to poke, prod or attempt to pop blemishes, this can lead to scaring and larger problems on your skin in the future. Try to leave it alone, and speak to your doctor about handling your acne, so you can enjoy blemish-free skin."
Dr. Amy Ross
Dermatologist
"The best beauty advice I have ever gotten is to embrace new technology for age-old issues. For decades, countless people have been annoyed by their underarm sweating, but with the invention of miraDry, an in-office procedure that non-invasively eliminates the sweat glands resulting in a lasting reduction of underarm sweat, the problem is solved."
Claudio Riaz
Founder of Claudio Riaz
“Having the right brushes to apply makeup and knowing which ones to use to create different looks especially around the eye area, is critical to achieving a polished, sophisticated finish.”
Jenny Cho
Celebrity stylist for Suave Professionals
“The best beauty advice I ever got was from my mother who told me not to fight my natural hair texture and to just let it be what it wants and to embrace it.”
Tim Quinn
Celebrity makeup artist at Giorgio Armani
"My Aunt Marion used to always tell me 'a touch of sun adds an air of intrigue...'"
Lexie Masterson
CEO of Clairvoyant Beauty
“My grandmother was a great beauty. Her skin was gorgeous until the day she died. We grew up in Texas and I was sailing every day on Galveston Bay in the summer, so the first rule was sunscreen, hat, long-sleeve shirts and stay out of the sun at midday. But she also showed me how to care for my skin. She would make me a mask of cucumber juice and aloe vera after a day in the sun, for its healing and cooling properties. She'd give me rosewater cream to soften and rehydrate my skin.”
Makiko Braxton
Spa Director at The Modern Honolulu
"When I was 15 years old, my mom told me that women's age shows on hands because people take care of their face by applying expensive creams, etc., but not many would realize that hands are always exposed to sun and it causes sun spots and wrinkles! She advised me to always rub hands after applying my face cream to my face, using the remaining cream on my hands. Makes a big difference!"
Kazumi Morton
Colorist and founder of Kazumi Morton
“Get obsessed with coconut oil!! Slather it into wet or damp hair before you get into the pool and it will not only help hydrate hair, but protect it from chlorine. Also [works] before an intense workout — sweat can negatively affect the condition of your hair. Coconut oil will help you maintain beautiful, smooth hair and maintain your hair color for a little longer, too.”
Susan Grey
VP of spa operations at bliss
“My aunt actually told me to invest in a silk pillow case because they don’t pull on your skin the way other fabrics do (less wrinkles!) and it also helps reduce bedhead since there’s less friction.”
Dr. Elizabeth Tanzi
Cosmetic dermatologist
“My Grandmother always told me to wash your face before going to bed, no matter what. It was great advice to remove dirt and debris from the skin.”
Lauren Padawer
Founder and CEO of Alaska Glacial Mud Co.
"The best beauty advice I have ever gotten has nothing to do with creams, potions or lotions: Get your beauty rest and drink lots of water!"
Eric Jimenez
Co-founder of Color Me
"The best beauty advice I have ever gotten was to use your foundation with another product for texture and to give your skin a little break. For example, mix your concealer with a serum which will help give you a fresh and dewy glow on your skin, while at the same time helping to hydrate and heal your skin. You can do the same thing with your concealer and your favorite eye gel — mix the two together and get the perfect, light daytime coverage. Apply with your fingers for an even and natural application and always remember less is more."
Jen Atkin
Celebrity stylist for Clear Scalp & Hair
“The best beauty advice I ever got was to switch my pillowcase cover. Now I sleep on satin or silk pillowcases so that my hair doesn’t get those nighttime tangles at the nape of my neck.”
Umbreen Sheikh
Owner of Wink Brow Bar
“My mother always said moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! Including a great eye cream to keep away the wrinkles around the eyes and being gentle upon application is key in achieving gorgeous, smooth skin! As she was a respected skin guru, she taught me to never pull or tug at my skin and always apply products in an upward motion — very similar to giving myself a mini facelift every morning. These tips have kept my face feeling great and wrinkle-free so far. I love all French skincare brand Isabelle Lancray products and religiously use the Hyaluronic Shadow Eraser around my eyes as well as the Vitamin C Cocktail Cream for my face.”
Dr. Roshini Raj
Gastroenterologist, media personality and co-founder of TULA , which recently launched on QVC
“My mom, a gastroenterologist as well, was an interesting and inspirational role model for me. The best beauty advice I got from her was that we need to take care of our insides to look good on the outside. There is no miracle in a bottle that will give you gorgeous skin if you are not living a healthy lifestyle and managing sleep, stress, diet and exercise. This advice later became a foundation for my new skin care line TULA.”
scoGinny Cardenas
Founder of Scotch Naturals
“The best beauty advice I ever got was to find something you truly love about yourself. Whether it’s a body part or certain clothing that is flattering, continue to perfect that element. I’m always told that I have beautiful eyes so overtime, I became very good at extenuating eye makeup. As a busy woman, I never leave the house without mascara or eyeliner – those are my on-the-go, can’t live without beauty products.”
