How To: Spring 2015 Minimal Nail Art Trend
-
Zimmermann
The key to this mani is to paint the curve of the teardrop a bit off-center, so that the teardrop portion of the nail is actually bare. To achieve this, the outside two-thirds should be painted with Zoya's Ziv ($9). Also, skip the base coat to avoid shine on the naked part of the nail.

To get this elegant mani, Gina Edwards created a custom mix of Morgan Taylor's Color Me Bold ($8.50) and Coming Up Roses ($8.50), and applied it to the very base of the nails. The color was saturated at the base of the nail and along the top, and it was kept clear for a look that resembled the Lucite heels featured in the show.

Opening Ceremony
CND introduced pixelated watercolor nails in shades of pink and coral, moss and mint and black and gray (the latter is our fave) at Opening Ceremony. To get the marbled effect, drops of acetone were dripped directly over the three different shades of VINYLUX nail polish that coated each nail.

To complement the colorful collection, Julie Kandalec for Essie used Tart Deco ($8.50) and painted half-moons on the nails to resemble an early morning sunrise.

To play off the English rose with a Kate Moss feel of the clothing, manicurist Gina Edwards for Kiss gave models oval-shaped nails and painted them with the white polish found in the Kiss Nail Artist Kit ($7.29). Edwards finished off the manicures with thin, gold foil tape from Kiss Salon Secrets ($9.99), which was placed close to the tip of the nail. The look was effortlessly chic.

Lead manicurist Katie Jane Hughes went for somewhat abstract nail art at this show. Hughes mixed butter LONDON nail lacquer in Cotton Buds ($15) and Full Steam Ahead (available in November) for a soft gray color. Using the ombre brush found in the Colour Hardware Nail Art Tool Kit ($30), she brushed on the custom polish from the right side of the nail to the middle, leaving a third of the nail totally bare.

Inspired by the muted color palette in the clothing, Rita Remark for Essie painted nails with one coat of Cocktails & Coconuts ($8.50), followed by a coat of Imported Bubbly ($8.50). To complete the linen-like nail art, she used Blanc ($8.50) to paint extra-thin, vertical and horizontal lines over the entire nail.

Creatures of Comfort
Our favorite nail trend was the use of negative space during NYFW. At Creatures of Comfort, nail tech Alicia Torello used Zoya nail polish in Penny ($9) on the bottom half of nails and Flowie ($9) on the top half, leaving a bare horizontal line in between the two. The result: A gorgeous combination of bronze and nude.

We love the playfulness of this watercolor-inspired mani created by Michelle Saunders for Essie. She started every manicure with a coat of Blanc ($8.50) to make the colors pop. Following this prep step, she used one coat of Bikini So Teeny ($8.50) on half of the nail, followed by a coat of Turquoise & Caicos ($8.50) on the other half, slightly overlapping with the other color. The final step before a top coat was brushing on Lollipop ($8.50) with a striping brush to create a thin, horizontal fault line across each nail.

Noon By Noor
The glistening half chevron art going on at Noon By Noor was nothing short of pretty. Nails were painted with one coat of Zoya's Erin ($9), followed by a freehand chevron design using Cosmo ($10).
