It’s not easy to keep hair healthy in the cold, dry months, so we turned to two leading industry experts, stylist Jonn Rhamani and colorist Alexis Unno, both from Salon Yoshiko at Bergdorf Goodman, to get the scope on just how to (easily!) do it.
It’s actually quite short and sweet. “Make sure you trim the ends to keep them looking healthy and shampoo less frequently in the winter versus in the warmer months to allow for the natural oils in your hair to nourish your strands,” says Rhamani. He also suggests using products with hydrating ingredients like rice oil. “Rice oil is a natural protectant and is full of soothing ingredients to nourish the scalp and hair. The Salon Yoshiko Signature Balanced Cleansing Shampoo and Signature Balanced Moisture Conditioner are the perfect combination to keep hair at its best, especially in the winter.”
Deep conditioning treatments and hair masks are also a great way to give your hair extra TLC during the colder months, according to Rhamani. “A great tip for deep conditioning is to apply the Salon Yoshiko Signature Balanced Moisture Conditioner 30 minutes prior to shampooing and then reapply and rinse as usual. I also love the Plarmia Hairserum Treatment because the technology of the ingredients really works to restore hydration, shine, and strength to the hair and scalp. You can leave it on after shampooing for anywhere from 30 seconds to 10 minutes before washing it out, leaving your hair feeling soft and it smells amazing.”
As for hair trends to keep hair looking its best this season, Rhamani is loving butterfly bangs.
“Whether you’re growing out curtain bangs you no longer want, are seeking a TikTok worthy update, or you just love the look of this style – it’s the perfect season to try it out! It’s a modern take on the 70’s ‘Farrah Fawcett’ and it works with all hair types, textures, and face shapes – you really can’t go wrong!”
He also notes that the 90’s blowout came back this past summer, and it hasn’t gone anywhere.
“It’s quickly become a classic style and transcends different hair textures (and looks great at any age) – as long as the right products are used based on your hair type. The goal is an effortless ‘bounce’ to the hair with no frizz or flyaways. You can achieve this look by blowing hair with a large round brush, large hot rollers or a visit to your stylist! The key to keeping it modern is to avoid a too-pronounced ‘Rachel flip’ (a la Friends).”
As for color Unno notes that richer, darker hair hues always gain popularity during the winter months. “The brownie batter and rich girl brunette color trends started gaining popularity this past fall, and are here to stay through winter, being seen on some of the biggest celebrities and models. Brownie batter is a medium to dark neutral-brown base interlaced with cool-gold balayage highlights – with a stronger focus at the front of the hair for a more visual impact and it looks great on all skin tones. Always consult with your stylist because they will be sure to get the shading right based on your current hair color, skin tone and eye color.”
He goes on to note that expensive brunette is similar in nature, with a mix of highlights and lowlights to add dimension to the hair, followed by a gloss for maximum rich shine. “This style is great because it’s easy to maintain and you can keep up the intense shine with at-home glossing products.”
