Texture Is the Way to Have a Fashion Moment at the Gym

If you’re a regular at popular boutique fitness studios, it can feel as though women put as much effort into getting dressed to sweat as they do for, say, lunch at Barneys. The gym can now, without a doubt, truly be a fashion moment. In fact, if you thought velvet was innovative, crochet knits were cool, bodysuits were hard to pull off or denim pieces were daring, brace yourself for the latest activewear trend: texture. We’re talking sequins. We’re talking ruffles. We’re talking fur. We’re talking rhinestones. Needless to say, this trend requires you to allot considerably more money for dry cleaning.

“The texture athleisure trend is straight from the runway — think Alexander Wang Fall 2018,” says Miami-based stylist Paula Collarte. “In particular I’m currently obsessing over all things Adam Selman Sport. He’s bringing runway styles to athleisure wear like never before. These are definitely pieces made for fashion savvy workout girls and are not meant to be limited to the gym.”

For example, Collarte suggests pairing his Black Crystal Legging with a black ankle bootwhite cropped tee and oversized black denim jacket. “This is a perfect date look that shows you aren’t trying too hard, but those sparkles are bound to grab someone’s attention.”

Three-dimensional effects don’t have to feel impossible to pull off. More wearable brands like Alala and The Upside offer gateways to the trend. Accessories like shoes and socks are another great way to ease into it.

Check out the slideshow above for some standout pieces, no matter how daring you’re looking to be.
