Vogue Japan March 2019 : Mariacarla, Chiharu, Irina, Natasha & Imaan by Luigi & Iango

Not Even Irina Shayk and Imaan Hammam Can Save Vogue Japan’s Tragic March Cover

Photographers Luigi & Iango have been the only thing keeping us even remotely interested in Vogue Japan lately. After a slew of unimpressive covers featuring actress Tilda Swinton and rapper Nicki Minaj, our forum members had all but written the magazine off. Thankfully, the publication has gone back to what it does best for the March 2019 issue: featuring models on the front cover. Mariacarla Boscono, Chiharu Okunugi, Irina Shayk, Natasha Poly and Imaan Hammam do glam rock for the multi-girl cover photo (Japanese Vogue‘s signature), decked out in mini dresses from Hedi Slimane’s debut Celine collection, styled by Anna Dello Russo.

According to our forum members, however, it was a missed opportunity. “The casting couldn’t be any more random! Mariacarla is definitely the one who doesn’t belong. And Irina looks unrecognizable. Everyone’s poses look terrible in full length. And then there’s the hideous styling which succeeded in making Celine look very high street,” remarked Benn98.

“Era of Innocence but they all dressed like … that,” laughed Rigida.

“Obviously, this styling doesn’t work on grown women. What they were thinking?” mocked Lola701.

“It is almost impressive how they managed to produce such a bad cover when Mariacarla, Imaan and Natasha are involved,” [Piece Of Me] said.

Apple felt the same way, writing, “How is it possible to make these stunning women look this bad?”

Sharing the same lack of enthusiasm was Ken Doll Jenner: “Three strikes already, Vogue Japan. Even Luigi & Iango, who can usually save this magazine managed to fail miserably. But then again, it’s not entirely their fault because those horrendous Celine dresses are a crime.”

“This is tragic! Well, every month is usually tragic for Vogue Japan. They need a new EIC or something. Every month the covers and everything look the same. Nothing new or fresh,” critiqued RanThe.

“Looks like leftover fashion from the Christmas season which should be in the sale section,” mocked tigerrouge.

One thing for certain, there are better cover alternatives from the shoot. Check them out and share your thoughts here.
