It would be a fair statement to say that British Harper’s Bazaar has lost its spark since Justine Picardie departed the title. Victoria Beckham offered nothing new for February and Emily Blunt bored us to tears on last month’s cover. Now the glossy gives its April 2020 issue to actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who makes for a refreshing cover subject as she poses before the lens of photographer Richard Phibbs. For the fresh and straightforward newsstand cover (below), the Brit beauty wears Gucci, but dons Prada on the subscribers’ alternative (after the jump) both picked by Leith Clark.
British Bazaar‘s latest left our forum members divided. “What a simple yet gorgeous cover, her stunning face is all you need. And such an unexpected choice for them, love it,” applauded Miss Dalloway.
“I love this. Simple and stunning. I love how it focuses on her beauty and not on any gimmick,” appreciated MON.

“YASSSS. I am so happy to see Gugu and the cover looks super pretty,” echoed [Piece Of Me].
But not everyone was thrilled. “Not sure if it’s the quality of the image or the actual cover, but I find this to be very grainy. I don’t get all the space next to her on either side and a bit of gloss wouldn’t hurt. But otherwise it looks passable. Just sad that the identity of British Harper’s Bazaar is now gone. This looks just like any of the many global editions now,” Benn98 complained.
“I hate it. That dress is extremely hideous and cheap-looking and so is this image. It’s a shame, her British Vogue cover was one of Edward Enninful’s best cause she’s naturally stunning, but her beauty is drowning in those tasteless shades of pink and gold…” added aracic.
“Feels like a school portrait snap. Somehow frozen and lifeless,” stated zoom.
