Kaia Gerber, Freja Beha Erichsen and Others Attempt to Break Gender Barriers on Vogue Italia’s May 2020 Covers

Italia’s sympathetic blank cover in response to the global pandemic is no doubt still fresh in your memory. But the Italian fashion bible is already looking forward to a brighter future with the unveiling of its May 2020 edition. Emanuele Farneti bestows upon us not one but four covers this month all in collaboration with L’Uomo in an attempt to break gender barriers. Cover one features Kaia Gerber by Karim Sadli, Freja Beha Erichsen fronts the second cover by Alasdair McLellan, Ryan McGinley captured a pregnant Grimes for the third cover while Anja Rubik and Harley Weir pair up for the fourth installment.

The covers took our forums by surprise. “They’ve finally done it! I’m completely shocked that they finally managed to publish a stunning cover. Kaia looks absolutely fantastic and I love the masthead color, it all works well together,” praised aracic.

“Wow! Simply stunning! I don’t care about the text placement, but this reflects what Vogue Italia used to be,” jorgepalomo chimed in.

“This is the first time where I see Kaia as a legit cover model. This is gorgeous,” raved Bertrando3.

Valentine27 was also a fan: “I couldn’t be happier to see Anja back on a cover of Vogue! Freja’s cover looks really nice, too.”

The theme left a select few scratching their heads, however. “If they are going to play the whole gender boundaries angle, I would rather they use someone who actually breaks the boundaries like Hanne Gaby Odiele or Nathan Westling. That being said, Kaia looks great, big improvement,” wrote dsamg.

“I’m going to pretend that the L’Uomo covers don’t exist and view the Vogue Italia ones for what they are without the ‘groundbreaking’ gender-bending gimmick: a great shot of Kaia and a pleasant reminder of what Vogue Italia used to be in its glory days,” voiced dodencebt.
