Virginie Viard continues to find her footing with Chanel’s advertising campaigns. Since stepping into the shoes of the late Karl Lagerfeld, the designer has picked everyone from Steven Meisel to Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin as campaign photographers. Now it’s Juergen Teller’s turn via Chanel’s Pre-Fall 2021 offering. Following the collection’s unveiling at the Château de Chenonceau in France, Teller makes use of the majestic location as the campaign’s backdrop. Brand ambassador Kristen Stewart makes an appearance as the face of the Renaissance-inspired collection posing on the grounds of the architectural masterpiece for the haunting images.
The campaign immediately caught the attention of our forum members. “So basically it looks like Kristen and Juergen took an unplanned walk after the show and this is what came out of it. At least the images feel very real and raw,” said toffie.
“I normally don’t care for Chanel ads too much, but this set of images really irritates me. It doesn’t even look like Teller, either, it really looks like the age of crappy digicams. All these images are missing is the date and time in one of the corners,” critiqued nejtak.
“Good god, what a disaster!” declared aracic.

HodanChloe shared the same sentiment: “Juergen Teller really needs to take a break. Kristen looks terrible here. I never understood what Chanel saw in her.”
“The problem that I’m having with Chanel is the lack of consistency. We were used to one vision in terms of campaigns for 30 years and suddenly, it seems like every photographer shoots a campaign…” noted Lola701.
But not everyone felt the same way. “Juergen Teller is one of my least favorite fashion photographers, but…I’m not mad. The rugged landscape mixed with Teller’s raw aesthetic works wonders together and I’m liking the juxtaposition between the wilderness and the immaculate and luxurious pieces of the collection,” voiced vogue28.
“The setting works and the rawness of the images actually lends itself to the clothes…” echoed reese06.
