Tom Ford needs to stop giving interviews, because each time he opens his mouth he says something weird about “fat people” and it’s really distasteful and it makes the fashion industry seem terrible. Back in December, the former Gucci designer raised a lot of eyebrows when he a told reporter that he believes that fat women look better naked, “without the constraint and lumpy pinching of clothes, all the straps and elastic squeezing and sucking.” Months later, it appears that Ford hasn’t learned his lesson, because he said this to a reporter for Time Out Hong Kong: “Well, I have to say if we have to talk about things like this, Americans are too fat. And in London they are starting to get fat too.” Anyone who’s actually suffering from obesity probably doesn’t want to get lectured about their weight by a super-glam high fashion designer. And anyone that isn’t obese, but doesn’t have a stick-thin fashion standard body is probably already well aware that they don’t fit Tom Ford’s beauty ideal. And yet somehow we can still live with ourselves. Shocking, right Tom?
Stylist and designer Nicola Formichetti has also decided to open his mouth in front of a reporter and say things about “fat people” — namely, that he doesn’t want to work with them because it’s too hard. HIS JOB IS TO DRESS PEOPLE! Heavier people probably are more challenging to dress than super-skinny clothing racks, but every job has its challenges. I, for example, have to write this entire post without calling Formichetti and Ford narrow-minded cowards. And look at that, I’ve succeeded.
[Update: Nicola Formichetti has been sputtering all over Facebook, denying that he ever made any negative comments about heavier body types. Believe him?]
