Speaking of embracing your own bad taste, it’s time for a tacky romantic metaphor: Once upon a time, the fashion and tech industries were eyeing each from across the bar. This went on for years, with only feigned indifference to fan the flames of their love; finally, their mutual friend Money brought them together, and so the two alphas started dating flat-out.
At first, things were totally casual: Remember when CFDA head Diane Von Furstenberg took a walk down the runway with Google’s Sergey Brin?
But lately, it’s gotten serious: In July, Yves Saint Laurent‘s former CEO, Paul Deneve, left the famed French fashion house to explore a new relationship with Apple.
And today, we’ve learned that another luxury brand’s CEO, Burberry‘s Angela Ahrendts, has surrendered to Apple’s siren song.
Ahrendts will join the Cupertino-based technology company as its head of retail and only female executive. Some speculate that Apple is attracting top fashion talent ahead of the rumored release of the iWatch, a wearable technology which would compete with Google Glass. Analysts project that the market for wearable tech accessories is set to grow astronomically within the next 3-5 years.
Burberry designer Christopher Bailey will take over for Ahrendts as CEO.
