Chanel’s Canvas Bricolage Backpack, Inspired by Broke Art Students, Costs $3,400

From this month’s issue of Vogue: a spotlight on Chanel‘s bricolage backpack, seen on the runway at the label’s Spring 2014 show

According to the copy, the high-end item was inspired by a DIY punk aesthetic: “Picture a young art student spray-painting the blank canvas of a classic backpack and then personalizing it with loops of haphazardly woven ropes and heavy chains — just the kind of punk appropriation Karl Lagerfeld employed [in this instance.]”

How much does it cost to carry a piece of Lagerfeld-designed rebellion? $3,400. That might sound a little steep for a horrific canvas backpack, stenciled with an oversized Chanel logo, but it’s only a fraction of the cost of art school tuition. Not to mention — if you want to dress punk, you have to be willing to spend.
