Michelle Obama is the most stylish First Lady we’ve had since Jackie O. She’s helped the careers of so many designers by simply wearing their clothes. Thom Browne, J.Crew and Jason Wu can credit the FLOTUS for boosting sales, and it’s pretty clear that Mrs. Obama is a chic lady.
The First Lady is hosting a Fashion Education Workshop at the White House, which will link fashion students with established members of the fashion community. The goal is to “bring members of the fashion industry to the White House and enlighten, educate and mentor the next generation of fashion leaders.”
The event is set to go down October 8 and the White House has invited Prabal Gurung, Bibhu Mohapatra, Reed Krakoff and more to participate. The event will also include a “Celebration of Design” reception.
We can all agree that an affair educating the next generation of designers is a good thing — it’s a tough industry to succeed in and kids need all the help they can get. Though we wonder why the CFDA isn’t involved. With fashion being such an important part of our culture — and for some of us, a huge part of our day-to-day lives — and having such a large economic impact (in the billions), it makes sense that the White House is parlaying Mrs. Obama’s love for it into education. But we have an organization that already seeks to mentor young designers. Perhaps next time they can join forces for something even bigger? Just a thought.
