Tom Ford likely made a lot of editors happy this season by choosing to show his latest collection in Los Angeles, as opposed to London or New York City. Considering the weather in both cities, it probably came as a tremendous relief for the fashion set to ditch their oversized fur coats and not have to worry about blistering temps. The designer set up shop at Milk Studios to show his Fall 2015 offering to a group of editors and an epic front row of celebrities.
If you thought Kanye West’s show was star-studded, you ain’t seen this one. Gwyneth Paltrow, Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore, Jay Z and Beyoncé, Miley Cyrus, Reese Witherspoon, Jared Leto and more flocked to the showing. Ford said that he chose to move his runway to the West Coast because he “wasn’t going to try to compete with the Oscars.”
Helpings of animal print, patchworked denim, fur, fringe and leather brought a modern, refined, rock ‘n’ roll feel to Ford’s offering, which he presented on a runway covered in petals. The range had all the toughness and enough slick, badass sex appeal to woo more than a few starlets and women with deep pockets.
It seems Los Angeles is going through a fashion renaissance of its own. It is a hub for clothing manufacturers — the city employs around 510,900 workers in the field, making it the U.S.’s largest manufacturing center. High fashion labels have been eyeing the town to set up stores — The Row opted to open its first flagship there as opposed to New York City. Hedi Slimane moved Saint Laurent’s design studio to the city. Could L.A. soon become a fashion capital in its own right? Perhaps. One thing’s for certain: It’s much less of a hassle to dress for sunshine than it is for 3 degree weather.
