Reese Witherspoon is an Instagram/IRL activist. The Oscar-nominated actress threw her support behind #AskHerMore, a social media campaign that encourages reporters to ask actresses more thoughtful questions on the red carpet – besides what they’re wearing. “It’s meant to inspire reporters to ask creative questions on the red carpet,” Reese said in a post to Instagram. “I love the Oscars AND fashion like many of you – & am excited to share #WhoAmIWearing later tonight… But I’d also love to answer some of these Qs….There are so many amazing, talented nominees this year..! Let’s hear their stories!”
We get Witherspoon’s feminist viewpoint, that women on the red carpet are worth more than just what they’re wearing. They are. Many of these actresses are brilliant women with impressive bodies of work, and we’re all for reporters asking nuanced questions. But really, Reese? Oscar nominees and starlets get plenty of opportunities to talk about their work – in magazine profiles, TV interviews, on the radio, etc. It’s not as if the public hasn’t heard anything about what you’ve done all year. We know all that stuff, because we’ve been hearing about it for months. What we don’t know is who designed your dress. Why borrow a dress and hire a glam squad for an event where fashion plays a huge part and ask people not to inquire about your outfit? (Not to mention the fact that designers are depending on the red carpet publicity in exchange for loaning out the clothes.) Just tell us it’s Tom Ford and be grateful that you’re in a privileged enough position to be able to pluck frocks from the world’s biggest design talents.
