We were all a bit surprised when the Miss America Pageant announced that Vanessa Williams, who was crowned Miss America in 1983 but had to give up her crown in 1984 amid a nude photo scandal, would be judging this year’s competition. We guessed Williams harbored no hard feelings towards the organization and now it seems the Miss America organization of 2015 has the same sentiments.
During last night’s broadcast, Miss America CEO Sam Haskell issued a public on-air apology to Ms. Williams for everything that went down over 30 years ago. “I have been a close friend to this beautiful and talented lady for 32 years. You have lived your life with grace and dignity and never was it more evident during the events of 1984 when you resigned,” he said. “Though none of us currently in the organization were involved in it, on behalf of today’s organization, I want to apologize for anything that was said and done to you and to your mother, Miss Helen Williams. I want to apologize for anything that was said or done that made you feel any less than the Miss America that you are and Miss America you always will be.”
Since losing her crown, Williams has had quite an illustrious career in film and music. Having to give up her title proved to be no hindrance, but it is nice to see her get some kind of recognition after all this time.
