Dolce & Gabbana Features Same-Sex Couples and Their Children on New Handbags

Dolce & Gabbana is turning over a new leaf. The Italian fashion house found itself embroiled in controversy last year when founders slammed same-sex marriages and in vitro fertilization. But with their latest designs, they seem to be embracing a wider definition of family. Stefano Gabbana shared two new handbag designs featuring same-sex couples holding their children.

One handbag shows a white male gay couple with three children, including a child with darker skin. The other portrays a lesbian couple that appears to be interracial. The modern family theme also adorns new T-shirts and blouses from the brand, which Gabbana is sharing using the hashtag #DGFamily.

This kind of inclusion stands in direct opposition to the views they expressed in 2015. At the time, Domenico Dolce told Panaroma Magazine, “We oppose gay adoptions — the only family is the traditional one. No chemical offspring and rented uterus. Life has a natural flow; there are things that cannot be changed.” And Stefano Gabbana echoed his sentiments, saying, “I am opposed to the idea of a child growing up with two gay parents. A child needs a mother and a father. I could not imagine my childhood without my mother. I also believe that it is cruel to take a baby away from its mother.” Their remarks were panned widely, even prompting Sir Elton John to launch a boycott of the brand. The #DGFamily movement is clearly a step in the right direction.
