Everyone who’s attended a summer wedding has confronted the tricky task of balancing dress code constraints with comfort. Ideally, once we make it to the seats surrounding the altar, the communal outpouring of joy for the happy couple eclipses all concern for one another’s outfit choices. Unfortunately, for nutrition and fitness coach Liz Krueger, this was not the case.
Faced with the prospect of scorching temperatures, Krueger chose to wear a body-con mini-dress with a sweetheart neckline to her friend’s June wedding. Many of her fellow attendees took issue with that choice, turning what should have been a celebration of love into an occasion for bullying. In a now viral Instagram post, Krueger described certain guests’ attempts to body shame her: “If only I knew that choosing this dress for a wedding on a 90 degree day meant so many women would be outrightly rude to me, and even come up behind me slap my ass as I’m standing alone,” she wrote. “As quote, ‘It was a dare from her friends, because I was a target.’ And then proceed to spill a full beer spilt down my arm. Just one of maaaaany acts of kindness of the night!”
Thankfully, Krueger’s not one to internalize senseless hate or let it get her down. Inspired by the outpouring of support from her fans, the wellness guru is starting her own pay-it-forward movement called #KruegerKindness, challenging women to support one another through charity and random acts of kindness.
“If you want to join me in this movement, share your stories on social media with #KruegerKindness and let’s kill all the mean girls with kindness,” she wrote in a follow-up Instagram post. “We live in a world that needs more women willing to put themselves out there for a good cause!!!”
It’s saddening to watch women undercut one another rather than standing together to promote feminist ideals. Much like #LeanInTogether, #KruegerKindness reminds us that we are one another’s most formidable allies.
