Viktor & Rolf Doodle on Vogue Australia’s Cover of Julia Nobis for December 2016 (Forum Buzz)

Our forums are forever ratting out Vogue Australia for not supporting local talent (the last Aussie to appear on the cover was Gemma Ward back in January), but it appears the magazine has heard our cries. Closing out 2016 is Aussie model Julia Nobis, who returns to the cover for the December issue. In conjunction with Viktor & Rolf’s upcoming exhibition down under, Vogue Australia tapped the designers to collaborate on a cover shoot by illustrating over a clean, graphic image of Julia shot by Daniel Jackson and styled by Christine Centenera.

At first, our forum members were unsure. “I don’t like this at all, it looks too much like her Jil Sander campaign. There’s a reason we hardly ever see Julia on covers in general (not just in Australia). It’s her perpetually vacant expression, which I don’t think appeal to most readers,” stated a underwhelmed Benn98.

“I love the concept and layout but I wish for a different model, she seems to be photographed always the same way IMO. This could have been easily by Willy [Vanderperre] and Jil Sander comes to mind,” kokobombon echoed.

Also underwhelmed by Julia’s presence was Nymphaea: “Would have loved to have only the illustrations on the cover. Julia is unfortunately very boring.”

Dior_couture1245 felt the same way, expressing, “Julia always gives the same expression in photographs….blank. And she’s always styled this way, too.”

Yet not everyone was left so disappointed. “Such a pristine cover, and probably Julia’s best Vogue Australia cover to date,” raved ash92.

“This is awesome. Julia looks great. Illustrations look great. Love the layout,” MyNameIs said in delight.

“I love this! It’s so fresh with the doodles. A lot of Vogue editions should take notice and do their own thing too. It’s a great shot of Julia,” congratulated iperlchen.

Magsaddict shared the same outlook, adding, “Wow!! This is so unexpected and crisp. I think the red masthead will really pop on newsstands. Thank god VA finally did Julia justice.”
