Anna Wintour has made it clear over the years that she’s a huge admirer of Lupita Nyong’o. As a result, we’re not too surprised to see the actress back on the cover of the magazine for January 2018. Giving us the polar opposite of last month‘s studio shoot, Lupita shows off her yoga skills while standing on a surfboard in the water. Shot by Mikael Jansson, Lupita was styled by Tonne Goodman who selected a (non-waterproof) silver embellished Christian Dior bodysuit and skirt.

The cover reminded our forum members of another yoga-inspired Vogue shoot. “Man oh man. All I can think of is how great Christy Turlington’s yoga [Vogue October 2002] cover was,” voiced A.D.C.
“Christy Turlington’s yoga cover was divine, such a shame we would never see that kind of cover anymore,” added chanelh.
“I can’t help but think it looks like someone told to do a yoga pose rather than someone who actually does yoga, doing a yoga pose. If that makes sense. Not all that convincing, but the color scheme is nice for January I guess,” wrote honeycombchild.
Not everyone was feeling the outcome. “Wow, what a let down! I mean I am so over her on Vogue (can we get her a solo W cover?). The woman photographs like a dream, so what is this? How did they do her so wrong? All her previous covers were fantastic to me, but nothing works here!” Miss Dalloway wrote.
JoCaderone was quick to comment: “Why Lupita again? I would love to see Viola Davis or Kerry Washington on the cover!”
“Models exist for a reason. As much as I like Lupita, I wish Vogue would give covers to other talented women of color,” added TaylorBinque.
“I am so sick of Anna Wintour I can’t even put it into words. As many on here have already said, she could have had many different women on this cover, but instead she goes with Lupita for her annual Vogue cover. Unbelievable. I wish she’d retire. She lacks zero creativity and vision at this point in her career,” declared Handbag Queen.
