Vogue Australia’s Attempt at Diversity Falls Flat

Ever since our forums got wind of Vogue Australia’s “diversity” cover shoot back in December, we’ve been waiting in suspense for it to drop. The outcome is finally here, arriving in the form of the magazine’s April 2018 cover. Photographed by Patrick Demarchelier (really, Vogue?), the magazine finally joins the 21st century and embraces diversity with models Fernanda Ly, Akiima, Charlee Fraser and Andreja Pejic. The group comes together, “uniting Australian fashion” while wearing head-to-toe Celine, styled by Christine Centenera.

Our forum members were not impressed with the effort. “They have absolutely no chemistry between them, whatsoever. And I have no interest in this,” voiced KateTheGreatest the second the cover came to light.

“This is good enough for one of the ANTM show challenges…” pointed out KissMiss.

“This wouldn’t be the first cover that treats the demand for diversity as a tick-box exercise,” tigerrouge chimed in.

Sharing the same sentiments was Miss Dalloway. “What a horrible cover, that background, their expressions… were they even shot at the same time? What a letdown. They make more effort with their celeb covers!” she scolded.

“I’m disappointed in the model choice. There are so many more deserving ‘diverse’ Australian models. Adut Akech, Shanina Shaik, Kelly Gale, Jessica Gomez and Duckie Thot are just a few I can name,” stated gunsnroses.

Benn98 wasn’t buying it either. “I didn’t know Vogue Australia cared about diversity at all so it’s a bit of a surprise to me, and it just rings hollow,” he wrote.

“Feels insincere, Andreja on the cover was something Kirstie Clements wanted to do before she was fired — and that was six years ago!” exclaimed magsaddict.
