Charlize Theron Wears Couture on the Beach for US ELLE’s Questionable May Cover

Nina Garcia’s feet are now firmly under the EIC’s desk at US ELLE and she continues to attract heavyweight cover subjects. We got Angelina Jolie for March, Kim Kardashian for April and now May goes to Charlize Theron. (It’s hard to believe Charlize’s last cover for the magazine was way back in June 2003.) Shot on Malibu beachby master fashion photographer Mario Sorrenti, the actress sports a swimsuit paired with a full-length fringed Christian Dior Haute Couture coat — everyone’s go-to beach look, right? — styled byGeorge Cortina.

Almost immediately, our eagle-eyed forum members sensed something was off. “That’s the best photo and tagline they could come up with? Exactly why I haven’t bought US ELLE in years,” said KateIsGr8.

“She’s normally very photogenic, but this is certainly one of her worst covers. Not her fault though. Why was it taken from that angle? And with the cape?” wondered Benn98.

Sharing the same thoughts was Miss Dalloway: “What is this? How do you ruin someone as photogenic as Theron! And that styling for a beach shot! Garcia is clueless!”

“What? Cortina? One of my favorites letting me down. Really George, what’s going on with that coat?” Lola701 asked.

“That poncho is scaring me…” added Handbag Queen.

JeanAvril was in the minority, writing, “The styling and lighting are questionable, but I enjoy it overall. It reminds me of that Natasha Poly Vogue Paris cover from 2007. Beach shoots are always up my alley.”

“It’s a weird cover, but I don’t hate it at all. I appreciate the experimentation,” admitted gazebo.
