Say what you will about InStyle, but there’s simply no denying the fact that Laura Brown has steered the magazine through the pandemic with ease. Despite the never-ending challenges, the mag has still been able to produce conventional cover shoots starring Regina King, Jodie Comer, Viola Davis and Kristen Stewart. Now for March 2021, Kate Hudson covers the American fashion glossy five years after her last appearance. In the vibrant and joyous cover image, a smiling Kate poses under the clear blue skies of Malibu giving us all the 90s feels sporting space buns and a smiley face T-shirt courtesy of Julia von Boehm for the pic snapped by AB+DM.
The cover flopped on our forums. “Seventeen magazine much? Kate’s way of booking these covers and career longevity while doing the bare minimum is worthy of an Unsolved Mysteries episode,” said an uninterested THD96.
“Was it really necessary to style her like a TikToker?” asked Benn98.
“This is exactly what Saturday Night Live or MADtv would produce for their skit if they were to make fun of fashion magazines,” Ken Doll Jenner pointed out.

KINGofVERSAILLES was also quick to critique the styling: “They really styled this 41-year-old woman like a 14-year-old. Absolutely ridiculous.”
“Why style her like that? Why did Kate agree? Looks clownish and even as a 90s tribute falls flat,” disapproved Xone.
“You just know they all thought they were being so funny, clever, edgy and hip with that styling,” proclaimed MyNameIs.
“A far cry from Kate Hudson’s cover of American Vogue‘s July 2006 issue by Mario Testino or British Harper’s Bazaar January 2009 by Cliff Watts. Not to mention how much a styling downgrade this is for Julia von Boehm,” vogue28 chimed in.
