Vogue China is going through a transition period. Last month’s trio of terrific covers starring Liu Wen marked Margaret Zhang‘s last as editor-in-chief. Zhang served as editor of the Chinese fashion bible since 2021 and oversaw a total of 33 issues. At present, there is still no official replacement or figurehead installed at the top job. Nevertheless, the show must go on and the magazine’s July 2024 installment is here for us to deliberate over. Zhou Xun makes a return to Vogue China’s front cover, just a little over a year after her last. The Chinese actress, regarded as one China’s “Four Dan Actresses” poses for Zhong Lin and is styled by Vogue China’s fashion director Vivienne Sun. Across a twosome of covers, the Chanel ambassador naturally showcases looks from the Spring 2024 Haute Couture collection of former creative director Virginie Viard.

“None of them work,” Bertrando3 scolded. The first one is silly, it looks like an outtake. The second one is too busy: the light is way too harsh, the painting and the model doesn’t work together, the pose doesn’t show off the outfit to its best advantage and the makeup doesn’t help. NEXT!”
“Snoozefest elegance,” shared crmsn, taking aim at Vogue China’s choice in cover line.
“I don’t think even an Old Master painting in the background could have distracted from how frumpy that Chanel piece really looks,” disapproved forum member Druscilla.
Vogue28 also wasn’t exactly elated over the outcome either. He wrote: “Not impressed with the photography here whatsoever, and the attempt to create something unique with the composition of the cover flopped hard. The colors of the first cover are nice, love the texture of that Chanel piece but it’s an unfortunate-looking and feels like a total mishap.”
