Designers are often inspired by their culture and enjoy translating their heritage into beautiful looks on the runway. Latino designers, in particular, excel at this. They bring an unparalleled sense of femininity and sensuality to their designs and hint at the rich cultural landscape of their homeland. And just as our nation’s population has never been more diverse, Bridal Fashion Week Fall 2017 was a multicultural feast for the eyes.
Perhaps to honor the late designer’s Dominican Republic roots, there was a strong ode to traditional Latin American dress at Oscar de la Renta via 3-D flora embroidered onto ceremonial gown skirts and bodices. Carolina Herrera drew inspiration from quinceañeras with her ruffle-tiered cake-topper dress. Whether it was incorporating flashes of color to a traditionally all-white affair or daring brides to take the plunge with their necklines, Latino designers infused their collections with glamour giving brides the chance to shine on their special day.
It was easy to picture the sultry Sofía Vergara in Francesca Miranda’s lace column wedding dress with its high halter neckline and shimmery pearl accents. Or perhaps Jennifer Lopez’s curves giving shape to Ines Di Santo’s leggy romper with its shiny lace-embellished high-low train in lieu of a conventional full skirt.
