Jillian Michaels: 6 Ways to Maximize Your Life

Fresh off a national tour about the subject, the star of The Biggest Loser and our June guest editor shares her tips for getting the most out of life.

1. Take inventory daily.

Over the course of your day (every hour or so while you are awake) stop and check in with yourself. What are you doing in the moment? How is it making you feel? Many people lead lives they think they should, but not the lives they truly WANT. This allows you to be present and let your feelings be your internal compass guiding you towards your passion and purpose on a daily basis.

2. Avoid chemicals.

Do your best to remove foods with fake ingredients – artificial flavors, colors, preservatives, sweeteners, trans fats, etc. By choosing food in its most natural form, you not only trim your waistline but add years of quality to your life. Chemicals make us fat and sick. Remove them from your beauty products, foods and household cleaning products whenever the opportunity presents itself.

3. Move your ass.

I don’t care how you move it – just move. Find an activity you love and do it. Often and fast. A minimum of four half-hours a week with a maximum of 6 hours a week. Exercise is the number one preventative medicine. It fends of disease, boosts sex drive, amps energy levels, builds confidence and empowers us in every facet of our lives.

4. Find your zen.

Carve out time for hobbies, meditation, vacations, bubble baths, beauty regimens… By pampering yourself each day, even if it isn’t for a long period of time, you make a statement that you value yourself and you matter.

5. Celebrate.

Take the time to celebrate your accomplishments. We spend so much energy on the things that go wrong, but very little on the things that go right. Small victories and accomplishments help us redefine our self-image and feel capable. No matter how small the success, acknowledge it and honor it.

6. Communicate needs.

Learn how to build a support system and remove toxic individuals from your life. We are the company we keep and having unhappy critical people around us brings us down. Find like-minded people in proactive environments like a spin class, online community, networking event and so on. Remember: “The people that mind don’t matter and the people that matter don’t mind” – Dr. Suess.
