If you’re a little burned out from seeing the Henri Matisse exhibit blow up your Instagram feed, just wait until you get a load of Egon Schiele: Portraits. The buzzy show opens today at the Neue Galerie in New York City, and it’s slotted to be a major blockbuster.
Despite the brevity of Schiele’s career, which only lasted about 10 years, the prolific painter mastered a recognizable style all his own, filled with emaciated and slightly distorted figures seeped in erotic undertones. Schiele, who apprenticed with Gustav Klimt, is considered an early founder of Austrian Expressionism and a figurative player in 20th century art.
This is the first exhibition stateside that’s devoted to the artist’s portraitures and features 125 likenesses of lovers, friends, patrons and sitters. The exhibit will be on display at the Neue Galerie until January 19, 2015.
