We won’t get into the boring details, but sometime soon — it could be a matter of weeks, it could be a matter of months — Instagram will replace chronologically ordered posts with an algorithmic feed and the world as we know it will be forever changed. In the ensuing scramble to restrategize our posting methods, social media maven Eva Chen, former editor-in-chief of Lucky magazine, Instagram’s head of fashion partnerships and creator of the #EvaChenPose, came forth with these words of wisdom:
“It’s not a numbers game. I feel like the fashion community is especially competitive and brands are looking at each other’s follower counts. But it’s the passion and engagement that people feel for a brand that matters most. That is a key gold star. You can have millions of followers, but more important is whether people are commenting and tagging their friends. That means you’ve created something that people are talking about and that’s what makes a good post.”
To help all us laypeople garner that engagement, we enlisted our own Insta-gurus, sisters Amra and Elma Beganovich, to share their secrets to taking great grams. Theirs is a story that will inspire all who’ve tired of the traditional career path. While both in their early 30s, Bosnian-born Amra and Elma ditched their uninspiring jobs as an economist and a lawyer, respectively, to build two major blogging brands — first Club Fashionista, followed by the eponymous Amra & Elma. With over 1.1 million followers on Instagram and partnerships with brands like Nicole Miller, Make Up For Ever, Burt’s Bees and Esprit under their belts, the brand ambassadors/digital influencers/creative directors have inarguably conquered the social media game. Above, their tips on how you can, too.
