Remember #thinspo and #thighgap? Once the plague of Instagram, these anorexia-glorifying hashtags have (thankfully) fallen to the wayside. Society’s definitions of health and beauty are (slowly) expanding. And while scrolling through Instagram is by no means the healthiest of activities, these days, the social media channel is more a loudspeaker for the body-positive movement than it is a source of debilitative diet porn.
Change didn’t happen overnight. The body positive community has fought to make Instagram a space for body acceptance and self-love, spurring on hashtags like #effyourbeautystandards, #loveyourlines and, most recently, #hipdips.
“Hip dips” refers to the dip between your outer upper thigh and your hip. As hip dips aren’t a universal feature, those who do have them sometimes feel self-conscious. Now, there’s a movement on Instagram to reclaim hip dips, embrace them, celebrate them. Users are posting stories of their journey towards self- (and upper thigh-) acceptance, along with the aforementioned hashtag. At present, the tag has 1,377 posts.
