Tommaso Aquilano and Roberto Rimondi pointed to a photo of Louis Armstrong’s trumpet from the late designer Gianfranco Ferré’s library as the inspiration behind their Spring 2011 collection. The photo acted as a starting point for the duo’s Jazz Age themed collection.
While the Jazz Age gave way to the “hotter, more sensual” spring collection, I suspect the glittering allure of a Roaring Twenties night out was also behind many of the pieces. It’s hard to refute this, considering the swinging, glittery sequin and crystal-covered pieces featured throughout the show, and the slew of slinky, pleated bandage gowns that closed the collection.
Despite all the eye-catching glitz, there was plenty of exquisite craftsmanship on display. The first coat featured on the runway was made of woven python strips in braided textures. This fine attention to detail was the backbone behind a collection of body-conscious dresses, Grecian goddess looks, tailored pant suits, and crisp, fitted skirts.
Bejeweled bags and strappy sandals complemented the seductive collection, which consisted mostly of black and white looks featuring some pops of color and color-blocking in between.
