Zac Posen S/S 2011: Paris Fashion Week

Although his collection is typically one of the most anticipated shows of New York Fashion Week, this year, for the first time, Zac Posen opted to move his show to Paris.  Why the change in location? Posen believes the people of Paris understand his vision better.

Posen has always fancied himself somewhat of a couturier, so it was fitting – if not audacious – to show his Spring 2011 collection at the same venue once used by Yves Saint Laurent.

The young designer’s flair for the luxuriously lavish was evident in the collection’s feathers, fur, and lace. However, the resulting looks were not always successful.

Some pieces – like clashing fabric wrap dresses, a plunging sheer lace dress and skin tight ombré dress paired with over-the-top ombré feathers – gave a little too much “look.” There was too much going on, especially given the pin-up hairstyles and crimson lips.

Posen was more successful when the bold details were used sparingly. He attempted restraint with certain looks, like the fitted tweed jacket paired with a black feather peplum skirt, but the bottom could have done without the cut-out top it was paired with.

Other looks seemed more appropriate for the boudoir than for an elegant cocktail affair, especially considering the red and black color palette. One particular example: a long, sheer black, feather-trimmed look worn over a pair of black underwear. Where, aside from the bedroom, could anyone wear this?
