Highlights from Toronto’s World Mastercard Fashion Week Spring 2013: Joe Fresh and MATIS by Lucian Matis

Carrying on from the retro 60s vibe we saw in Pink Tartan, Joe Fresh also channelled a Mad Men/Betty Draper style, opting for diamond checkers, a bombardment of black and white, crisp pleated skirts, shift dresses, and Chanel-inspired suits.

The line also featured a football field fill of modern sportswear, utilizing clean shapes, refined minimalism, all infused with punches of metallics and optic prints. Ultimately, there were plenty of wearable separates — as expected from a mass market brand — with my favourite being a giraffe print maxi halter dress.

While Lucian Matis filled his signature line with canary yellow crocodile leather and Moroccan-inspired pantsuits, the designer showed the other side of the style coin in his affordable MATIS by Lucian Matis. Once again, prints were a major focus, with Matis concentrating his creative flare on a kaleidoscopic colours and floral patterns à la a Miss Hawaiian Tropics contest.

Though admittedly I’m a Kelly Cutrone-type junkie of black clothing, Matis’ birds of paradise paint palette is simply begging to be paraded down a Caribbean beach. Not skipping a single colour, the rainbow line is energetic, uber-feminine and, more importantly, accessible!
