Uber talented designer Peter Som can’t seem to catch a break these days. After all the talks surrounding his exit from Bill Blass, which officially was attributed to Som wanting to focus on his namesake line, there comes news that the designer has been forced to cancel his Fall 2009 Fashion Week show.
The reason? After teaming up less than a year and a half ago with Creative Design Studios, a division of Lord & Taylor LLC, Som has decided to split with them.
Creative Design Studios was created in 2007 to work with American talent and help fund and nurture their career. The reason for the split, Som says, is that he realized that the strategic interests of the two parties are no longer aligned and he feels that this is the best direction for his company at this time. The designer has further stated that he sees this parting of ways as an opportunity for his brand to reshuffle its deck of cards, adding that he remains creatively inspired and is looking forward to exploring opportunities where he can grow with the right partner or on his own.
Given the current state of the economy, and as an unfortunate result of the split, there will not be any Peter Som runway show during New York Fashion Week this upcoming season. Co-owner, CEO, and president of Peter Som Inc. Elana Posner adds that they had already planned on reducing the size of the collection and that they are exploring presentation options — a showroom presentation, a look book or private sales and press appointments.
