JULIAN LOUIE F/W ’09

Article excerpted from rocketrend.wordpress.com

Julian Louie has been getting a lot of buzz for being an apparent protégé to Francisco Costa of Calvin Klein, who worked very closely with him for his last two collections. One thing bad about being named as a ‘protégé’ at such an early point of his career is that people might either expect too much from him or simply look at his collections with Francisco Costa floating in mind. But Julian’s work is interesting and I would definitely notice it sans the upper end connection.

His Spring ’09 debut is a little raw and reminds me so much of Christopher Kane. But it is a very good representation of what and who he is as a designer.

Fall ’09 is a lot stronger, with a lot of great pieces.  Overall, it is at least something different amongst all New York collections (it feels like it came straight out of London Fashion Week actually). I like the shapes and structure, and the color palette is a lot lovelier than it was for Spring 09.
