We ask Saunder designer Emily Saunders our 21 questions as she prepares for her Fall 2014 show.
-
The night before my show I will most likely…
have dinner with my family and go to bed early; it’s very rockstar!
-
The morning of my show I plan on… having an adrenaline rush wake me up at around 5 a.m.
-
When it comes to managing stress… by the time the show rolls around, the only things keeping body and soul together are adrenaline and caffeine, so it isn’t easy. If I do truly need to decompress, I’ll meet up with my friends for a drink and a laugh or I’ll go for a shvitz at the Russian and Turkish Baths and get the stress beaten out of me with a platza.
-
What I’m most excited for Fall 2014 is… the beading. This is the first season I’ve worked with beading and I’m obsessed with the result!
-
For me, Fall 2014 is all about… 80s film noir.
-
The item of clothing I’m currently wearing the most is… my baggy leopard sweater.
-
When I’m at work, I love wearing… soft things.
-
The most treasured item in my closet is… a sea otter fur vest. I met Peter Williams, the Alaskan artist, a few months ago and we hung out a bunch while he was in town. We talked a lot about fashion and the work that he does using sea otter fur that he hunts and sews himself. At the end of his visit he gave me one of the vests he made. The vest itself is beautiful, but the thought and generosity behind the gesture is what makes it a treasured item.
-
My beauty essentials are… Benefit mascara and coconut oil.
-
My Fashion Week must-haves include… Spotify and coffee.
-
When I’m looking to get inspired I… spend time by myself.
-
I could never travel without… my iPod full of audiobooks.
-
The one electronic I can’t live without is… my iPhone.
-
If my days had one extra hour I’d… take classes. The first class on my list would teach me how to properly use the music-making program Reason and the second would teach me awesome aerial silks.
-
The last thing I Googled was… homunculus.
-
I’m dying to splurge on… a trip through Burma and Thailand.
-
My guilty pleasure is… Tetris.
-
I couldn’t survive Fashion Week without… music and hugs from the people I love the most.
-
I will always be excited about NYFW because… it’s like a game of fashion poker. For months all the designers in New York have been holding their cards close to their chest and finally everybody has to lay down their hands and show the world what they’ve got. It’s great reveal after great reveal!
-
When it comes to picking models… I look for girls who look like they belong in the clothes, who make wearing them look natural and effortless. Attitude is also important. If someone brings enthusiasm and good energy into the room, I’m far more likely to want to work with them.
- As soon as my show is over I plan to… get a whiskey with my homeboys.
