The Scene: Cat Deeley, Poppy Delevingne, Olivia Palermo and a smattering of British party girls were seeing stars at the Matthew Williamson Fall 2014 fashion show last night. In fact, the constellations were all over the mood boards Williamson revealed before the show on Instagram, were projected all around the show space and were of course a primary motif in the collection. It was “an attitude of optimism and high-glamour” according to show notes. The Matthew Williamson girl is “empowered and composed, exuding a playful and exuberant spirit.”
The Inspiration: “Sexy, powerful, enigmatic. Just some of the women staring down at me from my moodboard in the studio for autumn/winter 2014. They capture my vision of strong femininity. We’ll be seeing stars…” Williamson said pre-show.
The Look: The color palette was largely black and white with red, cornflower blue, lavender and red. There were also glamorous accents of pink and purple in sequins and fur. After a baby blue double breasted coat with a red polka-dot roll-neck mohair sweater with yellow shoes seemed to lay the foundation of the color palette, a series of “polka star” looks came out. There were everything from cropped jackets and skirts to 80s ruched off-the-shoulder dresses with the mod-looking print that resembled a flower.
Some of my favorite looks included a beautiful black stretch leather pencil skirt with a multicolored star motif, a yellow embroidered mohair crop top and poofy white fur jacket (there was also a version of the skirt in leather pants), a metallic star emblazoned zip front dress with a pink/purple fur cropped jacket, and a seductive tailored suit, jacket worn open over nothing but a spangly layered star necklace. There were also some statement pieces where feathers met large pom poms to create a sort of abstract polka dot.
The Accessories: Brightly colored booties with black laces all the way up the front ruled the show.
The Beauty: The dark and sexy makeup look was done by Lisa Eldridge with Benefit Cosmetics, especially lots of They’re Real Mascara. Slick ponytails with a center part were created by Mark Hampton for TONI & GUY Hair Meet Wardrobe, and nails were by Nails, Inc. London.
